Crushing

On the train the other day I happened to hear
This young boy who asked his father
The most fundamental question
He said, “Daddy, what does it feel like
Tell me how will I know
Tell me daddy, how will I know when I am in love?”

And his daddy didn’t quite know
How to answer this ancient question, he said
“Son, trust me, when it’s a fact, then you will know”
And the young boy fell quiet
Didn’t quite know how to take that
When you’re young, you know, it’s hard
It’s so hard to wait

And as I left the train, I thought about this question
I thought about how I would have answered it myself
If I’d ever have a child who wanted to know - perhaps I’d say…

When you come crushing into love
Then the whole world is turning upside down
And your stomach fills with butterflies
All you think about is her smile
There is nothing else that’s worth while
Than to be there close by her side
When she’s not there you are yearning
When you see her, you are burning
And the whole world turns sunny where you walk
It’s what makes us write and sing
It is a very special thing
When you come crushing into love

Yes, perhaps that’s what I’d say
Or something along that way
If I ever had a child
